Picasso uttered these words long after Cubism had been established as a formidable art movement. Its recognition as such however, demanded a tremendous amount of self-belief and perseverance on the part of its creator. Picasso was well aware that he could not retreat into the past and take up again a style of painting which had ceased to inspire him in any way. He had one faithful supporter at this time of crisis, a fledgling art dealer named Daniel Henry Kahnweiler, who was a friend of the wealthy German art critic and collector, Wilhelm Uhde. Kahnweiler’s response to Les Demoiselles d’Avignon was highly enthusiastic. He purchased all of Picasso’s sketches for the piece and would have bought the painting itself, but could not afford it. Kahnweiler’s portrait was one of the outstanding works Picasso painted in the Cubist style some years later.
